There are 3 main types of aeration. 

See below for a breif description of each aeration system.
  1. The Floating or aerating fountain.
  2. Diffused aeration systems.
  3. Floating pond aerator

1. Aerating Fountains - These units are defined as any device that splashes the water into the air to create an aesthetically pleasing display. Caution: Know that there are differences between decorative and aerating fountains. Our decorative fountains have aeration capabilities’ while other fountains on the market make claims that they have aeration when they are merely decorative. Don't spend the money on equipment if it's not going to be beneficial to your pond. When looking at Kasco Aeration equipment, rest assure these models are known as Aerating Fountains.

Each System has several basic components. There are several advantages to using aerating fountains. There are several Disadvantages to using Fountains.

  • Fountain Motor w/ chamber

  • Float w/ mooring lines

  • Anchored in place with common concrete blocks or stakes.

  • Control panel w/ a timer.

  • Photo eye in timer control to turn fountain on at dusk.
  • Better for 10 feet depths or less.
  • Minimum operating depths as shallow as 18 inches.
  • Very good at venting off unwanted gases
     
  • Add beauty to the body of water or pond

  • Doesn't aerate efficiently pass 10-12 feet

  • Uses a little more energy than a diffused aeration system

2. Diffused aeration is an effective and very efficient method of aeration for ponds with depths greater than 12’. By using compressed air injected directly into the bottom of pond through a diffuser, a continuous flow of water is moved upward and thousands of gallons of water are mixed with little expended energy. Diffused air systems are more natural in appearance and blend into your landscape better than surface Aerators or fountains.

Each System has three basic components. There are several advantages to using diffused aeration kits: There are several Disadvantages to using diffused aeration kits:

  • Air Compressor

  • Air Tubing - Weighted or non-weighted

  • Air Diffuser or Diffusser membrane

  • Electrical components are on shore, not in the pond

  • Aeration originating on the bottom ensures aeration of the entire water column. (destratification)

  • With proper sizing, distances of up to 2,000 feet of air tubing (not electric cable) are achievable, without the need for electricity nearby

  • Aerate up to 25 surface acres or more. (requires custom design)
  • The removal of waste gases and waste products (nitrogen, ammonia, nitrites, etc.)

  • Doesn't work as efficiently in shallower ponds unless you place multiple diffusers throught the pond

  • Doesn't make a display like fountain.

The air compressor is situated on shore and pumps air through the hose to the diffuser located near the bottom of the pond. The result is tens of thousands of tiny bubbles rushing out of the diffuser and rising to the pond surface, creating circulation and providing aeration.

These Compressor motors are designed for continuous duty operation and are oil-less for low maintenance. Periodic cleaning of air filter and replacement of diaphragm and gasket (called rebuild kits) every 2-3 years is all that is necessary. We can build much larger systems or alter these kits to fit you specific needs. Please call for assistance.

It is crucial to the life of any of our air compressors that they be protected from the weather as well as dust and dirt. These factors will significantly reduce the operating life of the compressor. We offer several covers or cabinets for outdoor use, or compressors can be housed in barns, garages or other structures.

  • The deeper an air diffuser is located, the more boiling action it will create and a larger area will be aerated.
  • Because ponds come in all sizes and shapes, one of our standard kits may not work for your application. Please call or email uscontact us with your needs and we can design a system tailored to your pond.

3. Pond aerators- Are very similar to the floating fountains. The main difference is it doesn't have the pleasing aesthetic display. It has the same advantages as the fountains but is most advantages when high oxygen transfer is the goal. That’s where the term high oxygen transfer aerator comes from. This most popular when aeration is the most important and we have shallow depths.
